Spin-on separators: Low pressure loss
StarBox2 is thename of the new spin-on separators from Mann und Hummel for de-oiling compressors. They ensure clean compressed air and at the same time reduce the energy requirements of the systems by up to 20 percent, according to the manufacturer. To ensure that compressors can work economically and ecologically, the manufacturer provides a filter system with coordinated components.
In addition to the air filter and oil filter, one component of the system is a spin-on separator, which ensures that the oil is separated from the compressed air so that it cannot escape into the environment. However, a separator with a high pressure loss hinders the outflow of compressed air, which leads to an undesirable increase in energy consumption. For this reason, a special focus of the development work is on minimizing these pressure losses. The filter system starts with the intake air filter, which prevents dust from the environment from entering the process chain and being deposited in it or causing damage to mechanical components through abrasion. A special compressor oil is injected into the screw compressor to dissipate the compression heat and seal any necessary gaps between the rotors and housing. This oil is cleaned of dirt particles and oil agglomerations by an oil filter before entering the compressor block. Finally, the spin-on separator follows at the end of the process chain. This has the task of separating the oil from the compressed air and making it available again for the oil circuit. It thus prevents compressor oil from entering the environment. sw
