VDMA: Small ray of hope despite a drop in orders
An 11% increase in orders from euro partner countries brightened the picture for the German mechanical engineering sector in September, the VDMA announced. Overall, companies recorded a decline in orders of four percent in real terms in September 2019.
"However, this monthly comparison is no reason to sound the all-clear," said VDMA Chief Economist Dr. Ralph Wiechers. This is because orders in the first nine months of 2019 were eight percent down on the previous year, with domestic orders falling by nine percent and foreign orders down by eight percent. "We do not see the negative effects of the many trade disputes and increasing protectionism easing and the global propensity to invest increasing," explained Wiechers.
In September, orders from abroad were two percent lower than in the previous year. The growth from the eurozone (plus eleven percent) was offset by a six percent drop in orders from non-euro countries. Domestic orders fell by nine percent.
In the three-month period from July to September 2019, the weakening mechanical engineering sector was also clearly evident, with orders falling 8% below the previous year's level. Domestic orders fell by 8% in the third quarter, while orders from abroad also fell by 8%. Orders from euro countries increased slightly by 1%, while orders from non-euro countries fell by 11%. as
