Schaeffler and Porsche set new record on the Nordschleife

With a new absolute best time of 5:19.55 minutes on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, set by the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, Schaeffler and Porsche are jointly proving just how powerful hybrid concepts are in motorsport.

"I suspected that it might work. The fact that the new best time is almost a minute faster is simply incredible," says Prof. Peter Gutzmer, Chief Technology Officer at Schaeffler. "Not least this milestone shows us how powerful and efficient hybrid-powered racing cars are. As a partner in this project, we are incredibly proud. Of course, this result shows how the technology has developed since Stefan Bellof's record lap. We are convinced that the combination of combustion engine and electric motor will also combine efficiency and driving pleasure in series production in the near future - and that with Schaeffler products."

Further developed Le Mans and WEC vehicle
The new record-breaking vehicle, the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, is a modified further development of the 919 Hybrid, with which Schaeffler and Porsche jointly won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2015, 2016 and 2017, as well as the drivers' and manufacturers' titles in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). The prototype draws its power from a hybrid drive consisting of a petrol engine combined with two different energy recovery systems. Two-time Le Mans winner Timo Bernhard was at the wheel.

The record-breaking drive on the Nordschleife was one stop on the tribute tour around the globe in honor of the 919 Hybrid. In its first appearances, the sports car had already set a new best time on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit and had completed demo laps in parallel flight with the Porsche 956 C in the run-up to the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. As a partner in the project, Schaeffler is contributing its expertise for the mobility of tomorrow. The technology company develops solutions for environmentally friendly, optimized internal combustion engine powertrains as well as for hybrid and all-electric vehicles.
