Digitization

First machine-readable packaging system for optimizing the entire process chain through to high-quality recycling
Netto Marken-Discount is the first European retailer to equip its own-brand packaging with an "invisible", machine-readable label that is integrated into the design and carries all the required information in order to implement the digitalization of packaging across the entire process from production to recycling. Unlike the familiar barcode, the marking is integrated on all sides of the packaging and also includes the code for the red light scanners at the checkout tills. As the code is completely on the packaging, no codes need to be turned to the scanner and the process is made much easier. The invisible code can also automate the packaging process by controlling the machine or logistics. It can provide consumers with additional information and shopping aids using a smartphone app. One of the major challenges of our time is the conservation of resources and the transition to a circular economy. Here too, coding, which also contains precise information about the packaging material used, can considerably simplify the sorting of packaging from the "yellow bags" and thus ensure high-quality recycling and a genuine circular economy. Netto Marken-Discount has made a major contribution to the digitalization of packaging with this step, which can support manufacturers and consumers even more in the future.
