Seal with self-diagnosis

Andreas Mühlbauer,

Meaningful data on the service life of the seal

Seals prevent substances from penetrating or entering technical components. The intelligent seals from Freudenberg Sealing Technologies can significantly expand this core task in the future: the seal itself is also a sensor and becomes a "smart seal" thanks to its "built-in" functionality via materials and design.

One of the company's specific concepts is an intelligent rod seal. This forms a capacitor with outer layers of an electrically insulating elastomer and an inner layer of an electrically conductive elastomer with a metallic housing wall. If the seal wears through successive abrasion of the insulating layer, the distance between the electrically conductive layer and the metallic housing is reduced and the capacitance increases. It is therefore possible to measure the condition at any time, which allows conclusions to be drawn about the service life if the wear remains constant. This allows maintenance times to be planned with foresight and reliability. This prediction avoids follow-up costs due to leakage damage and reduces the risk of batch contamination. As a result, the seal is used over its entire service life and is not replaced prematurely. The "Smart Seals" continue to meet all the same requirements as a conventional seal, including acid and base resistance, standards, service life and manufacturability.
