Load cell machines
Protection in the cupboard
A manufacturer of electric motors and large drives wanted to optimize the issuing of personal protective equipment. The handing out process was manual and needed to be simpler, faster and more economical. The tool service provider Hahn+Kolb had a new complete solution for this: automatic load cell machines that automate all administrative and issuing processes.
At its site in Tübingen, Innomotics develops geared motors that are used worldwide in areas such as conveyor technology, airport logistics and the automotive industry. However, one aspect of the company's operations proved to be a challenge: If employees wanted to pick up personal protective equipment, it was a time-consuming process for a long time. All PPE items were temporarily stored in simple cupboards in foremen's offices and had to be handed out individually by the department heads as required.
On the one hand, this takes up valuable working time, but is also associated with high material costs. Consumption and stock levels of PPE cannot be tracked centrally and each department has to reorder items manually. The organization and provision of important protective equipment was therefore time-consuming and could not be ensured smoothly.
Load cell machines for PSA management
A solution was needed - and with it, PSA dispensers from Hahn+Kolb. With the new load cell dispensers, employees can simply open the cabinet and remove items without having to book them manually. They can even handle several different products at once. The cabinets record the stock of each individual storage compartment using the load cells, automatically calculate the quantities removed using the weight difference and post the removals centrally. This revolutionizes PSA dispensing - long and cumbersome administration and booking processes are completely eliminated. The Hahn+Kolb solution therefore saves the department managers at Innomotics several hours a week. No code is required to access the locker. Employees can use RFID chip cards, at Innomotics these are even the existing punch cards. Access rights can be precisely regulated with the cards via user registration: Who is allowed to remove which items from the cabinets at what time can be set up. The quantity of products removed can be checked.
"The machines are a linchpin in the company, because we can't work without cut-resistant gloves in production or protective suits in the paint shop," says Michael Löwel, process technologist at Innomotics. "It was important to us to guarantee a reliable supply of PPE items and at the same time relieve our foremen of the time-consuming administrative task. We quickly achieved this effect with the PPE dispensing machines."
Automation saves costs
Innomotics initially purchased four cabinets, which have been saving time in the production, assembly and paint shop for three years. Now the issuing and administration of the important protective articles are no longer a waste of resources. The quantity of PPE products used and their procurement costs have even fallen by around a third, as manual dispensing often leads to unnecessary over-issues. "Sometimes too many PPE items were retrieved, or errors were made when storing or issuing them," recalls Michael Löwel. With the current system, items are issued to the respective employees on a personalized basis, which leads to better self-monitoring. Thanks to real-time monitoring of the stock in the cupboards, the vending machines also recognize when the stock falls below previously defined minimum quantities and automatically trigger reorders. This means that items are available around the clock.
Automatic refill service
In addition, Hahn+Kolb's overall concept not only includes the dispensing machines themselves, but also a replenishment service that ensures the continuous replenishment of well over 50 different products. In order to calculate the required stocks, Innomotics originally determined the article and quantity requirements for the previous 18 months. The initial calculation was based on deliveries every 14 days, but the replenishment cycle has now been extended to every three weeks - which also reduces costs. In addition, supervisors and project managers can access an overview of stock levels at any time from any mobile device or PC.
Nikolai Barbje, Area Sales Manager at Hahn+Kolb, is delighted with the successful integration of the vending machines: "Our concept, advice and all-round service have not only impressed the project managers, but have also resulted in great satisfaction among the employees. Issuing PPE is now less complicated and more economical." Time-consuming processes for procuring hearing protection, safety goggles or protective suits are now a thing of the past at Innomotics.
Due to the high level of acceptance of the new system among all those involved, Innomotics added two more PPE dispensing machines to the inventory in Tübingen at the end of 2024. They are located in the paint shop to make work equipment such as brushes and cans available around the clock and to further optimize procurement and dispensing processes. There are now also plans to use the Hahn+Kolb machines to manage office supplies.
