Grooving and parting system

Andreas Mühlbauer,

Paul Horn at the Nortec

Paul Horn will be presenting a new generation of its M475 grooving and parting system at Nortec. The tool system enables high economical and productive milling performance.

To round off the milling system for narrower grooves, Horn has added narrower inserts with a cutting width of 3 mm and 4 mm. The precision-ground indexable insert offers four usable cutting edges, each with two left and two right cutting edges. The user therefore no longer needs different inserts to load the milling body. Horn offers the positive-cutting indexable inserts with a round chip groove in the RC4G cutting material grade. This grade enables high cutting performance in the milling process. The special surface treatment of the milling tool body provides a high level of protection against abrasive chip attack.

The basic bodies of the M475 system are available from stock as side milling cutters, shell milling cutters and screw-in milling cutters. The slip-on and screw-in versions are equipped with an internal coolant supply. Horn offers the side milling cutters in diameters from 80 mm to 200 mm. The cutting and groove widths are optionally 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm and 8 mm. The tools are available as slip-on cutters in cutting circles from 63 mm to 200 mm. The groove widths are the same as for the side milling cutter version.

The screw-in milling cutters are available from stock with a cutting width of 5 mm and diameters from 40 mm to 63 mm. The effective number of teeth of all variants depends on the respective diameter. For example, this is zeff = 2 for the 40 mm diameter slip-on milling cutter and zeff = 13 for the 200 mm disc milling cutter. The high number of effective cutting edges also contributes to the cost-effectiveness of the new M475 milling system.
