Schaeffler closes Luckenwalde site
The automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler is planning the gradual closure of the Luckenwalde site.
The goal communicated at the time of selling and partially relocating the Automotive Technologies division's plant in Luckenwalde could not be achieved within 15 months despite intensive negotiations between the employer and employee sides. The site with its product and component portfolio, which is at the end of its life cycle, is therefore to be gradually closed by July 2023 and the activities relocated. Negotiations on the reconciliation of interests are to begin immediately.
Matthias Zink, CEO Automotive Technologies at Schaeffler, says: "Over the past 15 months, we have held intensive talks with the local employee representatives. Although both sides made every effort, in the end it was not possible to find a joint solution, which we very much regret."
As part of its transformation towards e-mobility, the Automotive Technologies division currently finds itself in a particularly challenging global market environment, which makes structural adjustments and consolidation of locations imperative.
The planned closure in Luckenwalde is part of the measures agreed in September 2020, which essentially affect twelve of the company's German locations. For eleven locations, agreements on capacity reduction and consolidation were reached in constructive talks with the employees.
"The closure of the Luckenwalde site is painful for everyone involved. The task now is to reach a solution for Luckenwalde that is as socially acceptable as possible in swiftly scheduled negotiations with employee representatives," says Corinna Schittenhelm, Chief Human Resources Officer and Labor Director at Schaeffler.
