Looking ahead
Noticeable efficiency gains
Once a year, readers select the INDUSTRIAL Production products of the year. SEW-Eurodrive was successful twice last time. Editor Daniel Schilling spoke to Hans-Joachim Müller, Market Manager Electronics, and Gregor Dietz, Market Manager Motors, both at SEW-Eurodrive, about sustainability and efficiency in drives.
With the Movikit Power And Energy Solutions add-on "Predictive Charge Control" and the IE5 solutions with the DR2C synchronous motors, SEW-Eurodrive took two first places in the competition for the products of the year 2023. What motivated you to take part in the competition?
Hans-Joachim Müller: Both solutions aim to save significant amounts of energy. Saving energy is an important demand of our time. We are seeing that every industry, indeed practically every company, is adopting resource-saving solutions if they are sustainable - whether for economic reasons or for idealistic reasons. It is therefore important to us that the market is aware of the availability of these products. We are delighted that our readers have confirmed our developments with their votes.
Software solutions from SEW-Eurodrive will also be presented at the SPS in Nuremberg. What further developments are there in this area?
Müller: Our software development team is working tirelessly on smart solutions. Both the Movisuite engineering software and our software for inverter and control technology, our Movikit modules, are developing rapidly. Over 40 Movikit modules in 13 categories are now available - from simple speed control to complex kinematics with collision detection. Further software modules are intended for special applications, for example in intralogistics or machine automation. New additions include modules for predictive maintenance and for connecting to cloud solutions.
How have customers reacted to the products, is there any feedback or successes you can share?
Gregor Dietz: With the Movikit software solution in combination with the energy storage systems, noticeable efficiency gains have already been achieved in several robotics applications. Particularly with kinematics that transport heavy loads vertically, for example storage and retrieval machines or hoists, pleasingly high savings can be achieved. However, savings in the mid double-digit percentage range are also possible with smaller, very dynamic movements. In addition to the Movikit presented here, we have the expertise to estimate energy savings in advance using software developed in-house. Energy-saving solutions with IE5 motors are generally not one-piece applications, but applications with many drives. The first systems are now being implemented after a start-up phase, not only in Germany but throughout Europe.
