Controlled Pneumatics from Festo

Andreas Mühlbauer,

Why it is important to regulate pressure and flow optimally

Efficiency, process stability and energy savings are important parameters for modern production, especially in applications for sensitive goods. This requires an intelligent control concept that regulates pressure and flow precisely, energy-efficiently and flexibly.

With Controlled Pneumatics, Festo offers the solution: it combines proportional technology, sensor technology and digital control. In contrast to conventional systems with fixed settings, Controlled Pneumatics dynamically adjusts the values in real time. This increases production quality, reduces air consumption and extends the service life of components.

Stable processes

In practice, it is often noticeable how pressure and flow fluctuations lead to faulty products. Especially in sensitive sectors such as the automotive industry, medical technology, food and packaging, stable processes are crucial in order to avoid rejects and rework. A common problem is different pressures at different production stations, which can lead to a cylinder not positioning components exactly or a seal not being pressed with the correct force.

Proportional valves with a closed control loop can make a big difference here. They keep the pressure at the required level - regardless of load changes, fluctuating inlet pressure or leaks. In practice, this means that inconsistent processes can result in high reject rates - which can be significantly reduced with intelligent control.

Pushing the limits of pneumatics with controlled pneumatics

This innovative technology creates new fields of application, particularly in pressure and flow control. It pushes the boundaries of conventional pneumatics and creates simpler, safer, faster, more precise and more efficient solutions. Conventional standard pneumatics, on the other hand, are used in particular for simple applications such as point-to-point movements. The simple, robust and cost-effective technology in particular makes standard pneumatics the ideal solution in many cases. Controlled pneumatics are mechatronic pneumatic systems with innovative valve and communication technology. These allow digital control in conjunction with closed-loop control of a sensor variable.

As an example of controlled pneumatics, the new proportional pressure control valve VEAB with IO-Link shows how precise and flexible modern pressure control can be today. Based on innovative piezo technology, the VEAB impresses with its high control accuracy, virtually silent operation and comprehensive diagnostic options via IO-Link. Four customizable presets, intelligent switching functions and simple plug-and-play commissioning make it the ideal solution for demanding applications such as web tension control, dosing processes or force-controlled polishing.

If you want to improve process reliability and quality, there is no way around precise and automated pressure and flow control. This not only reduces errors, but also ensures consistently high product quality, less downtime and increases the overall efficiency of the system.
