Comau supplies industrial transport with Li-ion batteries

Comau is building one of the first automated production lines for lithium-ion battery modules for transportation applications for Leclanché, a provider of energy storage solutions.

The complete solution chosen by Leclanché is capable of automating the entire battery manufacturing process, from stacking and welding the pouch cells to the final assembly of up to 32 different product configurations. In defining the scope and design specifications during the simultaneous engineering process, the joint engineering team was able to validate the production process and propose changes to the battery module design to further increase the efficiency of the proposed manufacturing solution. In addition, the use of Comau's Lhyte laser welding machine should enable Leclanché to improve its welding process through increased productivity and model flexibility.

The project, developed through the simultaneous engineering process, includes several articulated Comau robots and the Lhyte hybrid laser solution, which combines a direct diode and fiber laser source in the same modular system. The line also includes in.Grid, Comau's interactive IoT and MES (Manufacturing Execution System) platform that enables data management and complete production, process and maintenance monitoring, with the option to include remote maintenance and teleservice functions.

Mass and industrial transportation is increasingly shifting to electric modes of propulsion, while authorities are introducing ever stricter regulations. Maritime transportation alone accounts for 13 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, and current projections indicate that emissions are expected to increase by at least 50 percent by 2050, assuming a business-as-usual scenario. The collaboration between Comau and Leclanché aims to drive the industrial production of energy storage solutions that will help accelerate the transition of maritime transportation to more sustainable power solutions. as
