POM plastics for vehicle interiors

With Kebaform XFA, Barlog is presenting a new product group of polyformaldehyde, or POM for short, at Fakuma.

According to the company, this is characterized by an improved stabilizer system, optimized end groups and a coordinated process technology that reduces formaldehyde emission values. The low-emission POM plastics are particularly suitable for use in the automotive industry.

Polyoxymethylene, polyacetal or polyformaldehyde, POM for short, is characterized by excellent mechanical properties, good sliding and friction properties and high media resistance. Among material specialists, this engineering plastic has therefore long been known as an all-round talent in the automotive world, especially for use in vehicle interiors. Whether as a gear wheel, sliding element, handle, switch, cover or housing, POM is a suitable choice in this area. The only drawback is that if the material is exposed to temperatures above the recommended guide values, increased formaldehyde emissions can occur as a degradation product during or after processing.

The use of functional parts in vehicle interiors places high demands on the materials used - in addition to growing requirements for strength, toughness, dimensional stability and wear properties, increasing emphasis is being placed on favorable emission behavior.

The basic range includes unreinforced POM copolymer grades with different viscosities (MFR: 6.5-45 g/10 min), impact-modified and UV-stabilized grades and meets current formaldehyde limits even under processing conditions (temperatures up to 220 °C, with a dwell time of several minutes).
