Dematic underfloor chain system

Etow automates printing press handling

Dematic has installed its Etow underfloor chain system at printing press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer Sheetfed. At the assembly site in Radebeul, the system automatically transports the heavy components to the twelve work stations where the units are assembled.

Thanks to the automated material flow, the world's second-largest printing press manufacturer in terms of turnover is reducing its throughput and assembly times. With Etow, Koenig & Bauer is also ensuring more structured processes in production.

"With the changeover to synchronized flow assembly, we have completed a paradigm shift in the assembly of our units. Dematic has provided us with the right material flow solution for this," says Doctor Markus Rehm, Head of Assembly Work Preparation at Koenig & Bauer. The system was not only convincing due to its high performance: Etow is also suitable for transporting loads that are difficult to move through the production process and can be individually adapted to the environment. In addition, the system is low-maintenance thanks to its durable components. The permanent lubrication of the chain by the drive reduces maintenance to just a few interventions per year.

The underfloor chain system is used in the production hall in Radebeul. Etow consists of a 40-metre-long channel with a circulating chain that can carry a maximum load of up to 120 tons. This allows up to twelve units of the aggregates weighing up to ten tons to be moved simultaneously. "Within a very short space of time, we have significantly reduced our throughput times and considerably increased productivity," says Rehm.

As a direct result of the reduction in throughput times, Koenig & Bauer has also reduced stocks on the line and is therefore tying up less capital. "Our customers also benefit from shorter delivery times," says Rehm.

Product carriers linked to the underfloor conveyor system are used to transport the printing presses to the twelve assembly stations. Large parts are handled at the work stations using cranes. Manipulators adapted to the respective application are attached to these. They enable safe, ergonomic handling.

The system components also include a control cabinet and a control panel. "Dematic specially adapted the control cabinet to the spatial conditions and also supplied a control panel that was customized in terms of hardware and software," says Rehm. Etow is also easy and intuitive to use. All the operator has to do is latch the transport trolleys onto the chain conveyor or pull them off it. The system is access-protected via a light barrier system, thus guaranteeing the safety of the employees. as
