Modular plant construction for corrugated board

BHS Corrugated relies on a high degree of automation and modularity in the manufacture of complex production systems for corrugated cardboard. A key component: connection solutions for drive, control and control cabinet systems. Helukabel supplies a product range that supports the machine and plant manufacturer in the implementation of its projects.

Whether shipping carton, packaging solution or display: corrugated board is an integral part of the modern logistics and consumer world. What appears simple at first glance is actually a complex high-tech product: lightweight, stable, recyclable and highly customizable. In order to meet the increasing demands placed on the material, corrugated board manufacturers need state-of-the-art machine and system technology.

Corrugators division since 1960

BHS Corrugated Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH knows a thing or two about this. The history of the company, based in Weiherhammer, Bavaria, dates back to 1717, when an ironworks was founded at the site. In 1960, today's BHS Corrugated added the corrugators division to its portfolio and has since developed into an internationally active supplier for the corrugated cardboard industry. The company employs more than 3,500 people in 20 countries and achieved a turnover of 827 million euros in 2024.

BHS Corrugated's portfolio includes complete corrugated board plants, machines, systems and Industry 4.0 solutions as well as logistics concepts and printing technologies. The production systems for manufacturing corrugated board can be up to 200 meters long. They are modular in design: The system components are assembled at the company's various international locations and then transported to the customer by truck or sea freight. The final assembly and commissioning of the complete corrugated board line only takes place there.

Technical diversity and global requirements

Electrical connection technology is indispensable in highly automated machines. Various cables and wires are used in drive and control technology as well as in control cabinet construction - many of them from Helukabel. The supplier provides products that are suitable for the various applications.

For example, control and connection cables such as the JZ-500, data cables such as the "TRONIC-CY", servo cables from the "TOPSERV" series or "TOPFLEX" motor cables are used. The single cores of the "FIVENORM" product family, which are certified in accordance with five different international standards, are also used in control cabinet wiring.

Markus Schrödl, electrical engineering specialist at BHS Corrugated, explains: "Global approvals are often mandatory for the components we use." The FIVENORM single cores are also suitable for automated processing and printing with a Komax machine.

Ready for connection to the workplace

BHS Corrugated obtains the cables required for the assembly of the individual system modules in Weiherhammer from a nearby assembly company. This company provides the cables in the required length and with suitable connectors, pre-sorted on assembly trolleys that are placed directly at the various line production stations.

"All our employees have to do is remove the cables one by one and place them in the right position in the machine," explains Schrödl. Other products for final assembly at the customer's premises are delivered on site with the machine to ensure a perfect fit.

One advantage is the international availability of Helukabel products. The company has locations around the world, which means that spare parts can be provided when servicing is required. "For a supplier like BHS Corrugated, which supports systems installed worldwide, this is a real competitive advantage," says Thomas Puchta, Area Sales Manager at Helukabel.

In July 2025, Helukabel was recognized by BHS Corrugated as a "Preferred Supplier". Group Chief Operating Officer (COO) Christian Schneider delivered the news in person. "We are delighted to receive this award, as it is a testament to the collaboration between us and BHS Corrugated," explains Puchta.

Around 95 percent of all cables installed at BHS Corrugated now come from Helukabel, and further projects are already being planned. Markus Schrödl adds: "Our two companies share the ambition to jointly develop solutions that will also meet future requirements. This is why Helukabel's connection technology will continue to be a central component of our machines and systems in the future."
