147,000 euros per hour: high costs for German companies due to unplanned downtime

According to the "Value of Reliability" study, 67% of industrial companies in Germany experience unplanned downtime at least once a month, compared to 69% worldwide. This costs the German economy EUR 147,000 per hour. Despite this, 21 percent of the German companies surveyed still rely on reactive maintenance concepts.

In the study conducted by Sapio Research in July 2023, 3,215 maintenance decision-makers from companies in various industries were surveyed worldwide - from power generation, the plastics and rubber industry, the oil and gas industry, the water and wastewater industry and the chemical industry to wind energy, rail vehicles, energy supply, shipbuilding, the food and beverage industry and metal processing.

More intensive maintenance increases availability

The results underline the importance of equipment reliability: 92% of the companies surveyed have increased equipment availability in the past year through maintenance, and 38% have increased it by at least a quarter. Three quarters of respondents believe that reliability has a positive impact on their company's reputation and financial performance and helps to meet contractual obligations, avoid waste and secure repeat business.

Reliability was named by respondents as the top priority when purchasing new systems. More than 60 percent plan to invest more in reliability and maintenance over the next three years, and a third intend to increase this investment by more than ten percent. Nine out of ten respondents are interested in results-oriented service contracts. The results of the survey suggest that it is worthwhile for industrial companies to switch from high-risk reactive maintenance to a long-term, results-oriented strategy. This is because it can improve reliability, reputation and competitiveness and reduce costs, allowing companies to focus on their core competencies.

Such a results-oriented maintenance model will also help industrial companies to meet upcoming emissions targets and requirements in the fight against climate change. It can also bridge the skills gap that will arise when experienced technicians retire.
