Industrial radiolocation solutions
Siemens takes over RTLS provider Agilion
On March 29, Siemens acquired Agilion GmbH, a provider of industrial radio positioning solutions (Real-Time Locating Systems, RTLS) in the main application areas of production, logistics and maintenance, based in Chemnitz.
Agilion is a pioneer for RTLS in the ultra-wide band (UWB) frequency spectrum. The technology enables high-precision positioning in the range of a few centimetres, a high number of positioning objects and particularly easy commissioning. Companies can use it to optimize production and logistics, for example, by locating workpieces or vehicles precisely in real time, thereby increasing their quality, productivity and flexibility.
"With the acquisition of Agilion, we are now also offering real-time radio location solutions. This is an important addition to our comprehensive offering in the field of industrial identification and therefore to our Digital Enterprise portfolio," says Herbert Wegmann, Head of the Industrial Communication and Identification business segment. "RTLS is an essential basis for a new level of flexible automation in manufacturing, for example through dynamic, self-organizing production concepts in the assembly of large products. In addition, real-time positioning enables the safe and efficient use of collaborative and mobile robots."
"For Agilion, the acquisition is the ideal step to roll out the high-precision and high-performance RTLS solutions on a large scale," explains Andreas Werner, one of Agilion's Managing Directors. "Together, we will take a leading position in the market for flexible automation solutions by combining the RTLS know-how developed by Agilion with Siemens' strengths in digitalization and automation."
RTLS can be used in complex environments for a wide range of applications. In production, for example, it enables precise monitoring of production progress and a transparent material flow. The real-time data on the location and status of objects that is accessible with RTLS forms the basis for networking the players involved and the logistics processes in their value chain. Users can automatically compare the current position of each production object with the 3D model of the product or the production environment on an ongoing basis. The evaluation and combination of this "digital twin" with other information - for example with apps from the open IoT operating system MindSphere - enables the dynamic optimization of production and logistics processes: this allows processes to be controlled more efficiently, downtimes to be minimized and the risk of errors to be reduced. RTLS also enables completely new processes in production, material flow control and logistics, for example in connection with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) or mobile robots. Reference projects with well-known industrial customers demonstrate the performance and system maturity of Agilion's tracking system.
Agilion, with around 60 employees, is a global technology leader in the field of enterprise radio tracking solutions for industry and local public transport in the application areas of industrial supply chain tracking, vehicle tracking and people tracking. With around 150 installations in over 20 countries, the company has been supporting its customers for over ten years with process optimization and efficient corporate management based on RTLS real-time tracking solutions. Agilion will be integrated into the Industrial Communication and Identification business of Siemens' Process Industries and Drives Division.
The companies will be presenting their joint offering at the Hannover Messe in Hall 7, Stand A23 and at the Siemens main stand in Hall 9, Stand D35. kp
