Metav 2022: lots of potential for 2024
After the postponement to June, many exhibitors had to cancel their participation in the metalworking trade fair. The VDW organizers are nevertheless satisfied and are looking to the future.
Metav 2022 - the 22nd International Trade Fair for Metalworking Technologies - took place in an unusually small setting this year. The route to the only hall, Hall 16, led through the vacant Hall 17 and there was still room there too. Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Managing Director of Metav organizer VDW (German Machine Tool Builders' Association), explains the background: "The Metav date in March could not be kept due to the pandemic, which is why we were forced to postpone it to June. This was a huge burden, as over 200 exhibitors had to cancel their participation due to long-term in-house exhibitions or other commitments. In terms of content, however, we were able to find a good solution with the world's leading trade fairs wire and Tube, which were also postponed. This has once again increased the quality of the visitors in terms of their internationality and decision-making competence." The visitor survey shows that, in addition to the pure Metav visitors, up to 30 percent of additional participants took advantage of the synergy effects and visited Metav after Wire and Tube.
Significantly fewer exhibitors
Over 180 exhibitors had attracted around 3,500 trade visitors by midday on Friday. Around 22 percent came from abroad, mostly from Europe. "Metav 2022 came at a good time for us to get started. Of course, there could have been a few more visitors overall, but we've had a break for a few years now and can't wait forever until the conditions are perfect again," says Rainer Betz, Head of Marketing and Sales at Jansen-Maschinen GmbH from Rastdorf, summarizing the trade fair.
Sascha Gersmann, Head of Marketing at Esslingen-based Citizen Machinery Europe GmbH, adds: "We are always happy to be physically represented at trade fairs. The quality of the visitors was right and gave us a successful trade fair despite the difficult dates with many parallel events." Both statements reflect the mood in the exhibition hall.
Competent visitors with investment intentions
Markus Horn, Managing Director of the Tübingen-based tool manufacturer Paul Horn GmbH, explains: "Many of our visitors come to us with very specific inquiries. An interesting observation from this Metav is that we were able to welcome a fairly balanced ratio of new and existing customers to our stand." Dominik Jauch, Managing Director of Spinner Automation GmbH, Markgröningen, shares this assessment: "We have very specific projects on the stand every day and have already been able to close deals here, both with new and existing customers."
Metav has potential
Schäfer's overall conclusion after four days at the fair is positive, but he also has a task for the VDW team: "Like our exhibitors, we are relieved that we were finally able to hold the fair again after the many challenges of the past few years. However, we have seen a Metav that took place under difficult conditions and cannot be measured by the usual standards. Our task will be to raise Metav 2024 to the usual level again. The potential is there: 82 percent of trade fair visitors were satisfied with what was on offer, 87 percent achieved their trade fair goals. I am also encouraged by the number of visitors who told us in personal discussions that they will be back again in 2024. The VDW and its major exhibitors will do their utmost to balance out the trade fair calendar again in future."
