New institute management in Aachen
Dr. Constantin Häfner takes over at Fraunhofer ILT
Dr. Constantin Häfner will take over the management of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen in November 2019. With his technical expertise and international experience, the renowned laser physicist is an ideal choice to head the Fraunhofer ILT. Most recently, he headed the Advanced Photon Technologies program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, where he drove the development of the world's most powerful laser systems.
"Laser technology is a key technology for numerous central branches of industry in Germany and worldwide - from the automotive industry to aerospace, medical technology and quantum communication. Constantin Häfner is an excellent scientist and internationally recognized expert in the field of laser research," said Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. "I am very pleased that Dr. Häfner, with his many years of experience and his extensive wealth of knowledge, will support the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and Fraunhofer ILT in the future in consolidating and further expanding our leading role as a driver of innovation in the German and European economy."
"By directly linking cutting-edge research with industrial applications and maintaining a direct and open dialog with customers, Fraunhofer ILT brings innovative and competitive solutions to the market faster," explains Häfner. "This excellence is supported by the expertise and passion of its employees. It is very important to me to promote and further develop this culture."
After studying physics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Häfner completed his doctorate in physics. In 2004, he moved to the USA, first to the Nevada Terawatt Facility and from 2006 to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California. There, as Director of the Advanced Photon Technologies Program, he led the development of the world's most powerful laser systems and the research and development of pioneering laser technologies.
In addition to heading the Fraunhofer ILT, he will also take over the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University. As a university lecturer and institute director, he will be involved in the diverse R&D activities of RWTH, one of eleven universities of excellence in Germany. These include the interdisciplinary research work of 16 different RWTH institutes as part of the Research Center for Digital Photonic Production RCDPP and the Digital Photonic Production DPP research campus together with industry.
