Corona gap: engineers see know-how gap

According to a survey by the VDI Wissensforum, more than 50% of engineers see a gap in the further development of specialist expertise due to the impact of coronavirus. Around 60 percent are now calling for the state to invest more in the further training of skilled workers.

In May of this year, the Federal Council passed the so-called "Work of Tomorrow Act", which, together with the already passed "Qualification Opportunities Act", paves the way for companies to provide further training. However, the laws only apply in certain cases and are primarily aimed at promoting low-skilled workers. German engineers are now demanding that further training for skilled workers should also be supported by the state.

This trend is clearly reflected in the VDI Wissensforum survey: 58% of all respondents would like to see government funding for the further training of highly qualified specialists. A third even see Germany as a location for innovation at risk as a result of the coronavirus recession. The online survey "Continuing education in the corona recession" was conducted by the VDI Wissensforum with 660 participants from June 9 to 22.

"Right now, it is important to promote further training in order to counteract the crisis and its effects," says Timo Taubitz, Managing Director of VDI Wissensforum. "We need a comprehensive further training policy that does not leave out skilled workers. Without a better and future-oriented qualification strategy, we will find it difficult to overcome the recession."

Effects of the recession
The recession will have an impact on the engineering sector: Almost 60 percent of those surveyed estimate that there will be an acute impact for a year. This also has consequences for the further training behavior of engineers. For example, 65% assume that they will increasingly turn to online offerings in the future. Over half state that their company's training budget will remain the same. Qualification therefore remains a success factor that plays an important role in maintaining and expanding professional expertise, even in times of crisis. as
