Production of high-voltage batteries

Melanie Steinbeck,

Electrically mobile - sustainable on the road

High-voltage batteries for electric cars are produced at the BMW plant in Leipzig. SEW-Eurodrive supplies proven and new drive solutions from the Movi-C modular system for all process steps - from cell preparation to end-of-line testing.

In the early 2000s, the BMW Group built a new plant in Leipzig. It became a birthplace of electromobility. As a long-standing innovation partner, SEW-Eurodrive supplied proven drive solutions from the Movi-C modular automation system for battery module production.

Batteries play a central role for electric cars, as they enable the gradual transition to lower-emission drive alternatives. Increased raw material prices on the global market and the desire for sustainable production have led to growing demand for batteries from Europe. The emergence of regional, European value chains increases security of supply and speed of delivery. Another advantage is more environmentally friendly production.

All process steps implemented

In 2021, the BMW Group began producing components for high-voltage battery production at the Leipzig vehicle plant. The entire production process is now mapped here with five cell painting lines, three module production lines and two lines for battery production. They include all the necessary process steps: Cell preparation, single and double module assembly, adhesive application and welding, curing process, contacting, final assembly and end-of-line testing.

SEW-Eurodrive has been supplying the automotive industry with specially tailored drive solutions for decades. The Integrated Drive Solutions enable safer and faster production while keeping an eye on costs and energy efficiency. Optimizing production for customers is one of the most challenging and at the same time most interesting tasks for the experts from Bruchsal. There is also a long-standing innovation partnership with the BMW Group. The special feature of the "battery module production" project is that proven solutions from the Movi-C modular automation system were used here, as well as new products such as the PxG CM3C servo geared motor.

SEW-Eurodrive has professionally and reliably implemented the extensive requirements for drive technology - comprehensive safety technology, space-optimized control cabinets and worldwide standardization through the use of proven drive solutions - for the BMW Group. The Leipzig plant is currently preparing for the production of future models with expansion and conversion measures - with a view to the next 20 years of plant history.
