ABB: IE5-SynRM
ABB now offers an IE5 ultra-premium motor for potentially explosive atmospheres. It works with 40 percent less energy loss even under the most difficult conditions - for example in potentially explosive atmospheres and has been nominated for the Products of the Year 2024 in the Drive Technology and Automation category.
ABB has added a new member to its family of IE5 synchronous reluctance motors (SynRM): the IE5 SynRM with increased safety. With these motors, which have up to 40 percent less energy losses compared to conventional IE3 motors, safety and maximum energy efficiency can now be guaranteed simultaneously for hazardous areas for the first time.
The new variant of the IE5-SynRM was developed for use in potentially explosive atmospheres in many demanding speed-controlled industrial applications. It is characterized by precise control and high efficiency across the entire speed range, even at partial load. This makes the variant of the new IE5-SynRM-Ex motor ideal for upgrading standard asynchronous motors with increased safety for pumps, fans and compressors in sectors where explosive gases, vapors or dusts may occur, for example in the oil and gas industry, chemical industry, wood processing or in flour mills.
In addition to energy savings, the new SynRM with increased safety also enables customers to achieve a more cost-efficient design. For example, these cooler motors could be used in Zone 1-T3 areas where a motor with flameproof enclosure is traditionally chosen. In Zone 2, the higher load capacity of synchronous reluctance motors is important, as these motors deliver higher power than asynchronous motors for the same size in addition to improved efficiency. A particular application can then possibly be handled by a smaller and therefore more cost-effective motor.
ABB is now making the benefits of IE5 ultra-premium efficiency available for the first time to sectors with potentially explosive atmospheres, presenting a world first. The application of industry-leading technology has made the IE5-SynRM a game-changer for companies in a wide range of industries. For these companies, increasing efficiency is the key to achieving net zero emissions and optimizing their business costs.
A major advantage of the IE5-SynRM with increased safety is its cooler operation compared to standard designs. The bearing temperature is reduced by up to 15 degrees Celsius and the winding temperature by up to 30 degrees Celsius. This increases reliability, extends motor service life and reduces maintenance requirements. Synchronous reluctance technology combines the performance of permanent magnet motors with the simplicity and ease of maintenance of asynchronous motors. In addition, it does not require magnets or rare earths, thus protecting the environment. IE5-SynRM with increased safety are available in outputs between 5.5 and 315 kilowatts and in sizes from IEC 132 to 315.
