IT/OT Integration Summit 2026

Andreas Mühlbauer,

Experience with virtual control systems in real production environments

The end-to-end networking of IT and OT is considered one of the key levers for industrial transformation. The IT/OT Integration Summit addresses precisely this area of tension and brings together experts from production, automation and IT. The focus is on practical strategies, specific use cases and technologies that help to harmonize data flows, make processes more efficient and open up new digital business models.

The event will take place on June 24, 2026 in Augsburg and is aimed specifically at decision-makers from industry and SMEs who want to bring the worlds of IT and OT together in practice.

Roland Wagner, Head of Product Marketing at CODESYS, will provide a particularly practical insight. In his presentation "Experiences with virtual controllers in real production environments", he will address a topic that is becoming increasingly important: the virtualization of control technology.

Wagner explains the basics of virtual PLCs (vPLCs) and distinguishes them from classic PLCs and SoftPLC solutions. It becomes clear that vPLCs open up new possibilities in terms of flexibility, scalability and maintainability of production systems. At the same time, the presentation addresses key practical questions: How can vPLCs be implemented sensibly? What prerequisites are necessary? And what are the limits of their use?

Using specific examples, Wagner shows in which production environments virtual control systems are already being used successfully and for which applications they are particularly suitable. He will also highlight where classic control solutions still have advantages. A particular highlight is the live demonstration, in which the setup and use of a virtual control system is clearly illustrated and provides a direct insight into its practical usability.

The IT/OT Summit on June 24, 2026 at the Innovation Hub of XITASO GmbH in Augsburg is aimed at decision-makers from medium-sized companies who want to find out how these two worlds can be brought together in a meaningful way. The presentation is aimed in particular at machine and plant manufacturers and production managers who are strategically considering the future of their control architecture.
