Materialise supports industrial companies in South Korea

The government of Ulsan Metropolitan City, South Korea's industrial hub, will work with Materialise to promote the growth of local manufacturers with additive manufacturing. Under the agreement, the 3D printing software and services provider will engage in co-creation projects with local industries to identify opportunities to optimize manufacturing processes.

South Korea's seventh largest metropolis is the heart of South Korea's industrial economy, with the world's largest automobile assembly plant, the world's largest shipyard, the world's third largest oil refinery and many other industrial facilities. In order to strengthen the region's competitive position, the government of Ulsan Metropolitan City presented a growth plan that focuses on the integration of digital and manufacturing technologies. The aim is to make production processes and factories more intelligent and better networked.

"Additive manufacturing is a transformational technology that has the potential to fundamentally change the manufacturing process," says Johan Pauwels, Executive Vice President at Materialise. "With significant improvements in speed, quality and materials, additive manufacturing is quickly positioning itself as a complementary or alternative manufacturing technology in solving specific production tasks. Through weight, performance and cost advantages, it enables fundamental design optimization and functional improvements - for example, lighter constructions that cannot be produced with conventional manufacturing technologies."

Part of the agreement is to support manufacturers in Ulsan Metropolitan City in developing applications that contribute to business growth by significantly optimizing production processes. This will involve intensive co-creation projects in which Materialise will combine its 3D printing expertise with the industry and product knowledge and manufacturing experience of the respective manufacturer. During the project, both companies will look for elements in the production process that can benefit from the design optimization opportunities and manufacturing flexibility of additive manufacturing. The results of the co-creation projects will be presented at the Ulsan 3D Printing Tech Festa from September 13-15, 2018. They will serve as a template for other manufacturers to use additive manufacturing as a complementary manufacturing technology. kp
