Sculpture "The Thinker" in 3D metal print

The larger-than-life metal figure "The Thinker", designed by artist Moto Waganari, was exhibited at the Art Karlsruhe art fair. The sculpture was created entirely using a 3D metal printer from Berlin-based 3D metal printing experts Flying-parts.

Virtual sculptor Moto Waganari models sculptures on the computer, which he previously had built up layer by layer from plastic using a 3D printer. The resulting grid structures were up to 90 cm high. At the Art Karlsruhe art fair, Jörg Heitsch presented Waganari's larger-than-life figure "The Thinker" for the first time, which was produced entirely using an industrial 3DMP metal printer.

It is the result of a joint project between three high-tech companies in the Berlin.Industrial.Group. Under the leadership of the 3DMPLiving unit, the contract manufacturer Flying-parts produced the sculpture. It was printed on Gefertec machines, not as a compact component in sheets as is usually the case, but using software developed by Flying-parts. The software made it possible to create metal struts point by point, which grew into curved limbs. The 30 individual parts were then assembled to form the finished sculpture. Unlike previous processes that use metal powder, the 3D metal printers used used wire as the starting material, which means easier handling at lower costs for the manufacturers.
