CAD converter

Converted with ease

The transfer of non-system design data often causes problems for machining companies. With the increasing complexity of the manufactured components, the demands on the conversion programs have also increased. Wilhelm Lippold Sonderwerkzeugbau und mechanische Bearbeitung was also faced with these problems. The company found an inexpensive solution with a wide range of functions in the CADdoctor program from Camtex.

Converted with ease

Companies in the mechanical processing sector often receive CAD data from their customers. Now they are faced with the problem of having to transfer this data into their own system. To do this, they need suitable and reliable software for converting and, if necessary, repairing the incoming design data. This is also the case for Wilhelm Lippold Sonderwerkzeugbau und mechanische Bearbeitung. The company specializes in development and design, mobile 3D measurement technology, rapid prototyping and reverse engineering. Over the years, the craft business has been continuously modernized. After CNC machines and 3D CAD were introduced, the design tasks became increasingly complex. Wilhelm Lippold was now looking for suitable conversion software in order to be able to process supplied data.

Due to its close collaboration with an automotive manufacturer, the company had previously found itself in the situation of having to convert external design data from the Catia V5 CAD system for further processing in-house. At that time, the system was the one most frequently used by manufacturers. In the past, the transfer of external CAD data was often a problem due to a lack of compatibility. "We wanted to integrate a Catia converter directly into our SolidWorks," recalls Udo Gehrmann, Production Manager at Wilhelm Lippold. Camtex offered a solution to this requirement with its Datakit converter plugin.

However, as the data sets supplied became larger and more complex due to the details depicted, the Datakit converter reached its limits. "The software could no longer cope with the increasingly large data sets, and the results that could be generated no longer met the requirements that had grown in the meantime," says Gehrmann. Functionality is his top priority. "Software has to work flawlessly. A cheap solution is useless if it doesn't do its job. Nevertheless, price and performance must be in a reasonable relationship." Wilhelm Lippold therefore analyzed exactly which requirements had to be met and how a solution could be implemented within the defined financial framework.

New ways to convert data

The experts compared various software solutions from different manufacturers. The focus was on functionality, but financial aspects also played an important role. After weighing up all the arguments, the company opted for CADdoctor SX from Camtex. The software is part of the process chain and allows external data to be accepted and repaired as required. In addition to the preparation of external data, CADdoctor is also used at Wilhelm Lippold for so-called simplification, i.e. the generation of envelope geometries and the repair of intermediate statuses from the company's own design.

Design is a complex process. CADdoctor ensures a clean data set at the start of the process chain. As a result, the program reduces rework and the need for corrections at a later stage. While mainly Catia data was processed when it was introduced, this proportion has fallen to almost zero at Wilhelm Lippold as a result of the car manufacturers switching to Siemens NX. The software is now used for converting STEP, STL and Parasolid file types.

"CADdoctor gives us the opportunity to solve practically all problems that arise in connection with design data within a very short time and in-house in an increasingly complex environment," says Gehrmann. In addition to the possibilities that the program offers in dealing with CAD data, the service and support have convinced Wilhelm Lippold's users. "Orders in design and production are becoming increasingly time-critical, and in the event of an acute problem, we always have a contact person at Camtex available immediately," emphasizes the production manager. Thanks to its ease of use, CADdoctor offers the company all the functions it needs for its requirements and helps to speed up the production process and make it more efficient. am
