Barlog Plastics joins Science-Based Target initiative

Barlog Plastics has joined the Science Based Targets initiative. The SBTi has confirmed the company's goal of reducing Scope 1 + 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to the base year 2018. Part of the declared goal is also to analyze and reduce Scope 3 emissions in order to make a major contribution to climate protection.

Science-Based Target initiative to secure climate targets

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a joint initiative of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and the World Wide Fund for Nature. It supports companies in aligning their climate protection activities in such a way that the 1.5°C target of the Paris Climate Agreement can be achieved. The targets set by the companies are evaluated by the Science Based Targets Initiative. At the same time, the companies undertake to comply with the SBTi standards for greenhouse gas accounting.

Greenhouse gas emissions are divided into different scopes. Scope 1 emissions relate to greenhouse gas emissions caused directly by the company, for example through stationary or mobile combustion. Scope 2 bundles the emissions caused by the purchase of energy.
energy purchases. Scope 3 includes all emissions from upstream and downstream supply chains.

"We don't just want to make our contribution to climate protection and identify and implement potential for this in our company. It is also important for us to communicate these goals clearly and openly and to regularly review progress. For this reason, we have joined the Science Based Targets initiative," says Peter Barlog, Managing Director of Barlog Plastics GmbH.

Climate protection measures

In addition to the measures already taken, such as the installation of a photovoltaic system on the company building, a large proportion of the company's other electricity requirements are covered by renewable energies. Step by step, the entire vehicle fleet is being converted to e-mobility and Scope 3 emissions in the supply chain are being analyzed.

"These are the first major steps in identifying and reducing potential. But we are also trying to motivate all employees on a small scale to save resources and make their day-to-day work more sustainable," says Nicole Lange, responsible for sustainability at Barlog Plastics. "We will do everything we can to achieve our declared reduction target and are continuously working on new ways to improve our greenhouse gas balance," adds Lange.
