Misumi starts MTO component production in Europe

In future, Misumi will also manufacture its make-to-order (MTO) components in Europe. This will start with hinge pins and screws with lugs, with further components to follow in 2021. Until now, the production of precisely configurable machine components has taken place exclusively in Asia.

Misumi will gradually expand its European production capacities and its MTO range produced in Europe. From next year, in addition to hinge pins and screws with shoulder, axle pins, linear shafts, spacers and rotary shafts will also be produced at the European production sites. The expansion of global production capacities will then make it possible to meet demand. In addition, the company will adapt more closely to European customers and their requirements, for example with specialized services and product variants. "With the launch of MTO production in Europe, we are moving closer to our regional customers. To this end, we are also building a production network in Europe that includes strategic partnerships in addition to our own production. This will enable us to offer our customers competitive prices and short response times in the long term and meet our high standards of quality and delivery reliability," says Arno Schwarz, Senior Corporate Officer at Misumi.

Less dependent on production in the Far East

The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic make it clear that customer proximity and the ability to react quickly to changing customer requirements are of crucial importance, especially in mechanical engineering. By manufacturing MTO components in Europe, Misumi hopes to further increase its crisis resilience and be able to support its customers in any situation in the future. So far, the company says it has not had to close its production on a single day thanks to its redundant manufacturing concept, and the production facilities are in operation around the clock.

Misumi has been manufacturing customized drawing parts in Europe for years. In addition, the Japanese manufacturer also offers design engineers standard components and products from partner companies that complement the Misumi range. The central component of the product portfolio, however, are the numerous precisely configurable MTO components. Normally, design engineers would be forced to design their own components if they require non-standard components. This is often expensive, especially as it is associated with increased purchasing expenditure and costs in the supply chain. With MTO products, on the other hand, the effort for the designer is limited to configuration in the manufacturer's online store. Helping customers to achieve simpler and more cost-effective design and procurement has a method at Misumi, as Alexander Straube, Manager Business Development, explains: "We call this TCS, or Total Cost Saving. This refers to our concept of relieving our customers of time-consuming work steps throughout the entire process, from design and supply chain to production and logistics. The customer only has to configure their desired product and can then order it straight away, as the price and lead time are already known at the configuration stage. As we deliver on time in more than 99 percent of cases, there is no need for the customer to keep stock. The fact that we now manufacture selected MTO components in Europe also shortens delivery times."
