Sustainable through virtual twin

To achieve sustainability, manufacturing companies can make use of life cycle assessment solutions. Dassault Systèmes is showcasing one such solution at the Hannover Messe and presenting a showcase that addresses and highlights the topic of virtual twins.

Sustainable action requires consideration of the entire product life cycle along the value chain - from design and production to suppliers, the transportation of materials and components and the packaging process through to delivery and operation of the products. The effects of the use of the goods and the resulting waste must also be taken into account here.

Life cycle assessment solutions support companies on their path to sustainability. These are software solutions that can be used to determine the environmental impact of products, materials and processes. Up to now, life cycle assessments have mainly been used to document the effects of past measures. However, the potential of life cycle assessment solutions goes further: "Even during the product development phase, there is an opportunity to determine its environmental impact and reduce it from the outset," explains Dominic Kurtaz, Managing Director EuroCentral at Dassault Systèmes. "This is possible by integrating life cycle analysis calculations into design, engineering and manufacturing software. This means that everyone involved has an insight into the effects of their actions at all times and can select more sustainable measures and options."

The life cycle assessment solution Sustainable Innovation Intelligence on Dassault Systèmes' 3DExperience platform supports companies in using a virtual twin of products or processes to consider and measure sustainability requirements as early as the development stage. "Such solutions therefore help to provide companies with sound and evidence-based findings in order to establish sustainable models," explains Dominic Kurtaz. "This enables users to reduce operating costs and overcome the major challenges associated with the decarbonization of value chains, sustainable production and energy and water use. At the same time, life cycle assessment solutions make it easier to enter the circular economy."

This year's showcase at the Dassault Systèmes stand will give interested parties an insight into how companies can promote innovation and collaboration with the help of a virtual twin and the 3DExperience platform. By giving all stakeholders access to a single information base, data and information is used innovatively throughout the entire product lifecycle - in line with the company's environmental, economic and social objectives.

The showcase focuses on the store floor and demonstrates how the real and virtual worlds merge with the help of a virtual twin experience. To this end, the demonstration at the stand offers four use cases from production and after-sales service relating to the use of virtual twin solutions and augmented reality, for example as assistance systems in assembly and maintenance and as a supporting or fully automated solution in quality inspection. Among other things, visitors to the stand will be able to experience a robot-guided camera system that compares the actual condition of a product with its target condition. This comparison helps employees to quickly recognize whether the construction status is correct or whether changes are necessary.
