FluiDyna strengthens Altair

Altair has acquired Germany-based FluiDyna GmbH, a renowned company specializing in NVIDIA CUDA and GPU-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical simulation, in which Altair made its first investments in 2015. FluiDyna's simulation software tools ultraFluidX and nanoFluidX were previously available to Altair customers as part of the Altair Partner Alliance and as a standalone license.

ultraFluidX is an efficient simulation tool that enables predictions to be made about the aerodynamic properties of vehicles in an extremely short time. It is also suitable for the investigation of building and environmental aerodynamics.

ultraFluidX addresses a wide range of applications in the field of internal and external aerodynamics, including in particular the rapid prediction and assessment of the aerodynamics of vehicles and buildings. The software is based on an efficient, hardware-oriented GPU implementation of the Lattice-Boltzmann method. In addition, the integrated volume meshing reduces the model preparation time for large, complex models enormously. ultraFluidX enables high-resolution, transient analyses of complex flow situations in just a few hours, which opens up completely new possibilities for simulation-based design and optimization in addition to significant cost savings.

nanoFluidX specializes in the prediction of single and multiphase flows in complex geometries with moving components. The software is based on the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method and is particularly suitable for applications with a highly variable flow topology. For example, the tool can be used to calculate oil lubrication in drive systems with rotating axles and gears and to analyze forces and torques on individual components within them.

James Scapa, Altair's Founder, Chairman and CEO said: "We are excited about FluiDyna and in particular the company's activities in the area of NVIDIA technology for computational fluid dynamics applications. We are convinced that the high performance and lower cost of GPU technology can fundamentally change current design processes."

"For more than 10 years, we have worked closely with FluiDyna, the NVIDIA Elite Solution Provider in our NVIDIA Partner Network," said Shanker Trivedi, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Business, NVIDIA. "Together, we have helped develop forward-thinking simulation tools to leverage NVIDIA technology throughout the design process to increase performance and improve efficiency."
In addition to enhancing the current FluiDyna products, the acquisition will also serve to bring together the technical teams of both organizations with a view to expanding Altair's CFD offerings.
