Increasing the security of industrial control systems

PTC company Kepware has released the latest version of its industrial connectivity platform KepServerEX Version 6.5. With this, the company improves the security of industrial control systems (ICS) and provides customers with tools and best practice examples that support defense-in-depth programs.

All industrial companies must protect their control systems.

KepServerEX version 6.5 is available free of charge for existing users with valid V5 and V6 licenses. The new version includes comprehensive secure deployment policies, better protection of project files, enhanced password configuration and other updated security components.

In order to strengthen collaboration with customers in the area of cyber security, PTC is introducing a "Shared Responsibility Model" in conjunction with the new software version. This model defines the framework within which PTC and its customers can work together to increase the security of implementations.

Defense strategies continue to evolve

"In today's security landscape, the pressure is on all industrial organizations to secure their operational networks. Recent breaches underscore the growing need for ever-evolving strategies, tactics and tools to defend against them," said Kathleen Mitford, Executive Vice President of Products at PTC. "By establishing the Shared Responsibility Model, we can work directly with our customers to address security issues facing industrial organizations of all sizes. We are committed to continually adding new security features to our products and maintaining up-to-date components. This helps customers avoid vulnerabilities and cyber attacks."

To promote the adoption of security best practices, KepServerEX includes a new, comprehensive guide to secure deployment. This is designed to help users deploy production instances in a way that avoids security risks. The guide includes strategic recommendations on using secure interfaces and the configuration API, ongoing server maintenance, installation, post-installation measures and more.

"PTC delivers innovations for particularly safety-threatened environments. We understand the challenges our customers face in improving the safety and availability of their facilities," said Jeff Bates, Product Manager at PTC. "With KepServerEX version 6.5, we want to further support our customers in reducing safety risks in production.
