Brownout: What it means for companies and how they can prepare
Many companies have been dealing with power outages since 2022. Energy became scarce for the first time and the term "brownout" haunted the media. Fortunately, the expected scenarios of a possible gas or electricity shortage did not materialize in the winter of 2022/23. At the moment, everything seems to be fine again. But is that really the case? Appearances can be deceptive.
In this article, we explain exactly what a brownout is, how it works and present the opinions of experts on the probability of occurrence. Finally, we give 6 concrete recommendations on how businesses with a temporary power supply for rent can prepare.
What are brownouts and what is the difference to blackouts?
In our highly complex electricity grid, exactly as much electricity must be consumed as is generated at all times. If there is too great a deviation, the system threatens to lose its balance. The transmission system operators must then intervene immediately and restore the balance. They have a range of instruments at their disposal to do this. If these measures are not sufficient, brownouts are the last resort. These are controlled, regional power cuts or severe voltage reduction.
The big difference to a blackout is that the power interruption in a brownout does not usually come as a complete surprise and is concentrated in individual regions. A corresponding warning period is provided, but will be limited to a few days at most. A blackout, on the other hand, happens suddenly and unexpectedly and can extend over large parts of Europe. The consequences are devastating and disaster and civil protection measures take effect.
Good preparation is crucial in the event of a brownout, especially for industrial and logistics companies and production facilities, in order to be able to act quickly enough and take appropriate measures.
How high is the risk of a brownout?
Before the 2022 energy crisis, such a scenario was virtually unthinkable. In fact, most people had never heard the term brownout before. Brownouts were discussed in December 2022, particularly in south-western Germany, partly due to the electricity shortage in France.
