Occupational safety

Daniel Schilling,

Alone, but connected

People working alone are particularly at risk of falling victim to an accident at work. They must therefore be protected by systems that automatically detect hazards such as falls, medical emergencies or being in critical areas, inform first aiders or trigger warnings in corresponding areas.

Systems currently in use cannot fulfill these tasks adequately. Wireless systems in particular have limitations in terms of real-time capability or range, for example. Radio experts from the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) are working together with Swissphone on a reliable wireless lone worker protection system with integrated area warning. Their solution is a low-power-wide-area-network (LPWAN) connection such as "Mioty". The solution is a radio protocol system that aims to set new standards in the field of wireless data transmission in terms of scalability, cost efficiency, range, transmission security and battery life. New applications, such as lone worker protection, are to be opened up by extending this wireless protocol. Here there are defined guidelines as to when the alarm must be triggered.
