The "Green Deal" and the European Plastics Strategy also call for a switch to a sustainable circular economy for packaging with the highest possible conservation of resources and recyclable packaging. The high requirements for packaging for foodstuffs such as fresh meat are a major challenge. Food protection and standardized processes have created standards here that can only be optimized with great innovative efforts from all those involved in the process. The major challenge was to replace the previous PP trays with PET/PE lidding films, which were difficult to recycle, e.g. for minced meat, with a packaging system made from a single material that is easy to recycle and saves a significant amount of material. Südpack, with its Pur-Line system, has succeeded in replacing the previous plastic tray packaging with a completely new tubular bag packaging for minced meat, for example. For such a change, which means new packaging machines and completely new handling for consumers, major sustainable improvements are necessary. And this is where Südpack's Pur-Line system scores highly. Here, a film solution has been developed that makes it possible to switch from the familiar tray system to a recycling-friendly PP tubular bag and also saves around 60% plastic material. Nevertheless, it still meets the high barrier requirements for fresh minced meat. As this system means that rolls of thin film no longer have to be transported to the meat producer instead of bulky trays, and the packaged minced meat also has lighter packaging, further raw materials can be saved and CO2 emissions reduced in addition to the savings on packaging material. Pur-Line has succeeded in replacing a packaging system that has been standardized for many years with a new, significantly more sustainable concept, which will certainly also be used for other fresh foods.
