
ORMOCER®- and bioORMOCER®-based barrier concepts for environmentally friendly packaging of the future
The ORMOCER and bio-based and biodegradable BioORMOCER coatings developed by the Fraunhofer ISC are highly functional and can achieve barriers comparable to those offered by multilayer structures at very low layer thicknesses of 1 - 3 µm. The multifunctional ORMOCER or BioORMOCER coatings thus enable the use of recyclable polymer monomaterials or paper-based and biodegradable packaging materials for food or pharmaceutical packaging. While bio-based packaging today has good oxygen barriers but only low hydrogen barriers, bioORMOCER achieves an excellent barrier effect against water vapor, oxygen and aromas. This means that polymers, bio-based or biodegradable biopolymers as well as paper or cardboard can be equipped with the barrier often required for food or pharmaceuticals. With this coating, recyclable monomaterials or even paper and compostable materials can replace existing multilayer packaging even with high barrier requirements and contribute to the circular economy.
