Optimization of spare parts management in maintenance
VDI guideline 2892 explains the interrelationships of spare parts management in maintenance.
Spare parts serve to maintain the function and value of machines and systems in use. Strategically oriented spare parts management requires a high degree of agility and the right balance between availability and cost-effectiveness in order to ensure maintenance. The full potential within an organization can only be realized through the continuous optimization of spare parts processes, the development of KPI systems and the use of modern technologies.
VDI 2892 describes the essential procedures and tools for the planning, control and continuous improvement of spare parts management. This includes objectives, responsibilities and requirements, the selection of spare parts to be stocked, storage, inventory management and procurement (procedures and methods), the provision of user-friendly spare parts directories, the creation of function-oriented reports and analyses, quality assurance, data processing and benchmarks (key figures).
The benefits of the guideline are particularly evident when it is consistently applied to the development or reorganization of the spare parts system in maintenance. The tasks and results of the spare parts functions must also be continuously reviewed and improved, for example because the tasks change over the life cycle of a system or the objectives of the company or maintenance have changed.
The guideline VDI 2892 "Spare parts management in maintenance" is published by the VDI Society for Production and Logistics (GPL). The guideline will be published as a white print in October 2019 and replaces the June 2006 edition.
