Big data can deliver significant added value for production: By analyzing machine data, manufacturing processes can be improved and various processes can be better coordinated.

In the context of the VDI/VDE 3714 Sheet 6 guideline , big data is about technologies for data analysis. Corresponding algorithms and tools can provide insights into operational processes and contribute to their optimization. This requires the implementation of these methods and tools for processing, analyzing and interpreting extensive and complex data in big data applications.

The guideline supports the creators and users in the preparation, development and commissioning of these applications as well as their sustainable use. Ultimately, these big data applications should create a more reliable basis for decision-making in order to improve products and production processes economically, ecologically and technically. The guideline helps to process the wide range of findings that have emerged in recent years from research, development and practical work and to support the development and use of big data applications in manufacturing industries and their use in regular operations.

The target group includes both practitioners and decision-makers - from the manufacturing to the process industry. The guideline looks at common approaches, methods and metrics for objectively assessing the quality of data-driven models and evaluating their suitability for specific applications. It was created by the "Big Data" expert committee of the VDI/VDE Society for Measurement and Automation Technology.
