Robot sales fall in the UK
While robot sales in the European Union increased by twelve percent, sales in the UK fell by three percent according to the IFR's World Robotics Report 2019.
The number of new industrial robots installed in the UK fell by 3% to 2,306 units (2018). In the previous year, UK robot sales had risen by 31%. The latest sales figures in the European Union, on the other hand, continue to be positive - with an increase of twelve percent. This is according to the preliminary results of the World Robotics Report 2019, published by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).
In terms of robot density by region, Europe has the highest level in the manufacturing industry worldwide with 106 industrial robots per 10,000 employees - Germany (3rd), Sweden (5th), Denmark (6th), Belgium (9th) and Italy (10th) are all in the top 10. The UK is in 22nd place worldwide with a density of 85 units, which is the global average. China overtook the UK in 2017 and is currently in 21st place with 97 units.
"The UK has been much slower than our main competitors to embrace robotic automation in all manufacturing sectors outside the automotive industry," says Mike Wilson, Chairman of the British Automation and Robot Association (BARA). "For years, the UK attracted foreign workers and companies preferred to hire people rather than invest in capital goods. The consequences of the Brexit vote and subsequent political developments are leading to a reduction in the availability of labor as the many workers originating from Eastern Europe begin to return home. As a result, companies need to ensure that they deploy their workforce effectively and find alternative ways to perform tasks for which they have a shortage of staff - robotic automation is an obvious solution." as
