Human-robot cooperation

Roboshield project for more safety in HRC

Modern production facilities, in which humans, machines and robots increasingly work together, must meet high safety requirements. The systems need to be safe for employees as well as protected against cyberattacks from outside.

In the "Roboshield" project, scientists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA and the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation IOSB are working on safety concepts, especially for small and medium-sized companies in Baden-Württemberg. Companies can obtain free advice on the safety of their systems.

"The demands on modern production facilities are constantly increasing due to digitalization and networking," says Dr. Christoph Ledermann from KIT. "With Roboshield, we want to make the transition to Industry 4.0 easier for smaller companies in particular. The initial aim is to ensure that the system components, such as robots, do not injure anyone."

Security as the basis for Industry 4.0
IT security is also becoming increasingly important: "This topic is more pressing than ever due to the cyberattacks currently being observed on production facilities," says Dr. Christian Haas from Fraunhofer IOSB. And last but not least, it is important to ensure data security for employees in increasingly networked working environments equipped with sensors. "By bringing all these aspects of security together, Roboshield can open the door to Industry 4.0 for companies," says Haas.

To enable companies to convert their systems quickly, cost-effectively and safely, the researchers are working on tools and processes that simplify the development and operation of safe systems and plants. In addition, an advice center is being set up where companies can get tips on how a robot can be used in their production plant, what advantages this brings and what rules and regulations need to be observed. as
