Kuka: Mairoflex iisy

With Mairoflex iisy, Kuka has launched a modular solution based on the LBR iisy cobot. The Mairoflex iisy enables a cost-effective, simple entry into automation - ideal for small and medium-sized companies. It has been nominated for the robotics category.

Loading and unloading a lathe with hexagonal steel blocks, which are then formed into the cylindrical shape of a bolt, is an everyday task in metalworking companies. However, it is one that is physically demanding and monotonous. The Mairoflex iisy, a modular automation cell, performs this task reliably and tirelessly. At its heart is the Kuka Cobot LBR iisy 11.

The need for automation in many recurring work steps is increasing, particularly in SMEs and craft businesses. To get started, they need their own, highly flexible solution that everyone can afford. Mairotec is a Kuka system partner and specializes in product and software development for automation solutions.

One application example is, for example, having the machine loading done. Placing the loading and unloading of the lathe with steel bolts in the "hands" of this solution enables a company to fully automate the process. The human colleagues can devote themselves to other tasks. The Mairoflex iisy performs the same task without interruption and without any signs of fatigue. It is also suitable for responding flexibly to changing production conditions. The modular automation cell can take on a wide variety of tasks in contract manufacturing, for example. It is transportable and can be moved to another, already 'taught' workstation in no time at all using a pallet truck. Thanks to the integrated zero-point clamping system on the floor, the cell adopts the exact position to which the new work process was previously programmed. This means, for example, that the 'move' from the lathe to the packaging of the finished parts is completed quickly.

The technological concept of the LBR iisy from Kuka creates the conditions for this flexibility of the automation cell. Its intuitive operability enables fast, productive use without prior knowledge. Based on the iiQKA.OS operating system, tasks are "taught" simply by manual guidance. With the Smartpad pro operating device, further programming is as simple as using a smartphone. In addition, the LBR iisy's integrated cable routing and power supply make changing tools quick and easy.

Accessories such as grippers and expert tips are easily accessible via the "Robotic Republic" digital ecosystem, which is part of iiQKA.OS. The LBR iisy fulfills all essential industry standard functions such as fieldbus protocols, digital I/Os, safety and more. This means that the automation cell can be easily integrated into any existing customer system. The cobot also scores points with its impressive joint speed, which qualifies it for a wide range of tasks. In addition to loading and unloading machines, the range of tasks also includes pick-and-place tasks, handling, packaging and quality control.

Safety aspects played a major role in the development of both the LBR iisy and the Mairoflex iisy automation cell. Instead of a protective housing, a 360-degree radar field from Inxpect is used, which surrounds the Mairoflex iisy like an invisible safety sphere. The system is so sensitive that it even reacts to the blink of an eye or breathing. In the event of physical movement in the safety zone, the automation cell immediately reduces its speed or stops completely and only starts up again when the track is clear.
