Siemens and UN Women train young women in Africa

Siemens and UN Women Germany will in future jointly support the African Girls Can Code Initiative, which provides girls and young women in Africa with comprehensive training in information and communication technology as well as leadership and programming skills.

Offers of this kind play a key role in combating gender inequality and empowering girls and women. Up to 625 young women are set to benefit from the partnership within two years. Siemens is initially providing 500,000 euros until 2023 to support local coding camps with learning programs for digital skills, programming and personal development. The coding camps cover topics such as robotics, the IoT, animation, 3D printing, gender equality and women's empowerment.

The company is also providing refurbished laptops for all participants. Elke Ferner, Chairwoman of UN Women Germany, says: "It's great that the technology company Siemens is doing pioneering work here and that we are breaking new ground together in digital education for young women in Africa. [...] Standing up for women's rights and educational equality is a social responsibility for all of us." Judith Wiese, Chief People and Sustainability Officer and member of the Managing Board of Siemens, says: "I am particularly pleased that we will be supporting this important UN Women initiative with our expertise in the future."
