Mocom plans to give up Gardelegen site

Mocom is planning to close the Gardelegen recycling site in 2026. The company cites the current market environment, a lack of regulatory planning certainty and low demand for recyclates as the reasons for this.

Mocom intends to close the Gardelegen recycling site in the course of 2026. The main reasons for this are a persistently difficult market environment, a continued lack of reliable EU regulations for plastics recycling and weak demand for recycled plastics.

"Under the current conditions, such as the persistently challenging economic situation, especially in Germany, a continued lack of reliable EU regulations and a persistently low price level for new goods, so-called prime goods, it is not economically feasible for us to maintain production in Gardelegen at present and in the foreseeable future," explains Jens Kaatze, CEO of Mocom. "We deeply regret this. The Gardelegen site stands for the great commitment of our employees and for our aspiration to advance the business of processing our own plastic waste on an industrial scale. The expansion at the Gardelegen site two years ago is a clear sign that we were convinced of the location and the business model of processing our own plastic waste. However, the current market and general conditions do not currently indicate any economically viable prospects for us."

Mocom intends to continue production at the Gardelegen site until mid-2026. Support for existing customers and ongoing business relationships will be ensured until further notice. The company will contact affected partners directly to discuss possible effects. Mocom attaches great importance to the responsible treatment of its employees. The next steps on how to proceed will be coordinated and implemented responsibly and in constructive dialog with the relevant works councils.

Sustainability remains a strategic focus

Mocom remains committed to the circular economy. The company has in-depth expertise in the field of recycled plastics, ECO products and sustainable solutions. "We will continue to focus on sustainable compounds (ECO compounds). Whether based on purchased recyclates, bio-based or mass-balanced raw materials. We have proven expertise in this area," says Kaatze.
