Takeover
MariaDB takes over MammothDB
MariaDB® Corporation, provider of a fast-growing open source database, acquires MammothDB. MammothDB specializes in databases for the analysis of large databases in large companies. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
With this acquisition, MariaDB expands its European presence with a new office in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. MariaDB is also increasing its global development and consulting expertise to further strengthen its modern analytics solution MariaDB AX and drive its database-as-a-service strategy.
"The MammothDB team that joins us has demonstrated an impressive track record in big data analytics," said Michael Howard, CEO of MariaDB Corporation. "We are at a critical juncture in our growth efforts. Over the past year, we've seen significant growth in MariaDB AX. Organizations are looking for an open source data analytics solution that can fill the gaps of proprietary offerings like Oracle or Teradata. MammothDB's expertise in big data analytics is invaluable to MariaDB as we continue to grow and innovate our analytics solutions."
MariaDB AX is a modern analytics and data warehousing solution that scales on-premises with existing commodity hardware as well as on public, private and hybrid cloud platforms. This makes MariaDB AX significantly different from MariaDB TX, MariaDB's transaction-focused solution. MammothDB had specialized entirely in data analytics in large environments, offering high-performance, cost-effective solutions for cloud and on-premise deployments. MammothDB's extensive development expertise will be incorporated into the further development of MariaDB AX to provide even better analytics capabilities for customers in any industry.
"We see great synergies between our goals and MariaDB's approach of providing innovative enterprise-level database solutions at a fraction of the usual cost," said Steve Keil, former CEO of MammothDB. "MammothDB was founded for companies that no longer see the value in spending 80 percent of their IT budget on license fees and hardware. As is the case with providers such as Oracle or Teradata. It is exciting to join forces with MariaDB to pursue this goal. And to provide the global open source community with an even more powerful analytics solution."
MariaDB is acquiring MammothDB at a very dynamic stage in the company's development, which has so far been characterized by investments from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Alibaba Group totaling 54 million dollars. The global user conference, which was organized for the second time this year, is also a result of the current dynamic. With the new office in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, MariaDB can consequently further expand its presence in Europe, accelerate the provision of solutions and offer better support to the growing global community.
