Investment in motion control software

Magna takes over Haptronik

In modern vehicles today, many functions are controlled by technologies that respond to gestures and the sense of touch. Haptronics thus improves comfort for drivers and passengers.

In order to further develop these advanced technologies for the automotive market, Magna has signed an agreement to acquire Haptronik GmbH. The company is thus investing in advanced motion control software and further expanding its market leadership in the field of mechatronics. Subject to customary closing conditions, the deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2019.

The Dresden-based technology company Haptronik specializes in software for controlling the movement of mechatronic products and develops algorithms that improve the motion control and "touch and feel" of mechatronically controlled systems such as doors and tailgates.

"This acquisition is about access to the vehicle and the connected experience we want to provide people today and in the future as the new mobility ecosystem evolves," said John O'Hara, President of Mechatronics, Mirrors and Lighting. "The Haptronik team is an expert in this field and will help Magna further expand our position as a leading supplier of mechatronics products."

The state-of-the-art technology supports and differentiates Magna's offering for mechatronic systems and specifically enhances the SmartAccess Power Door experience. In addition to effortless, smooth opening and closing of doors, the software also enables functions such as anti-slam and virtual door control.
