Survey on economic development

Andreas Mühlbauer,

German companies make an uncertain start to 2024

Last week, we asked INDUSTRIAL Production readers how they would assess economic development in 2024 in light of difficult political, social and economic circumstances for their company and industry.

The result is mixed, but still with a clear trend. Here are the results:

Optimism looks different: The results of the INDUSTRIAL Production survey on economic development in 2024. © WEKA Business Media

Around a quarter of all participants (25.5%) have a positive outlook for the current year and assess developments accordingly. By contrast, 38.2% are rather negative about the prospects. 36.4% of participants stated that the development for the current year is not yet foreseeable.

As mentioned, each survey participant assesses the economic situation for their own company or sector. The result is therefore naturally not representative. Nevertheless, it can be seen from the answers that almost 1.5 times as many responses are negative as positive. And a good third of all participants state that the development for this year is not yet foreseeable. Although this is not negative in itself, it does at least indicate a great deal of uncertainty in some parts of the industry - pure optimism definitely looks different.
