40,000 additional jobs in one year
Sales and employment in the Bitkom sector will continue to grow in 2019.
The market for IT, telecommunications and consumer electronics is set to grow by 1.5% to EUR 168.5 billion this year. By the end of the year, 1,174,000 people are expected to be employed in the sector - an increase of 40,000 jobs and a rise of 3.5% compared to 2018, according to the digital association Bitkom based on current analyses. "Digitalization is driving the market and is a guarantee for more jobs," says Bitkom President Achim Berg. "The job balance sheet could look even better if there were enough skilled workers." According to a recent Bitkom study, there were 82,000 vacancies for IT experts at the end of last year. In 2017, there were only 55,000.
Information technology continues to be the most important growth driver. According to the forecast, sales will increase by 2.5% to EUR 92.2 billion this year. The software segment will see the strongest growth with an increase of 6.3% to EUR 26.0 billion. The market for IT services is also growing at an above-average rate. In contrast, the hardware business is declining slightly. Telecommunications is on an upward trend again. In 2019, the market is expected to grow by 1.1% to EUR 67.3 billion. According to Bitkom calculations, telecommunications services will generate revenue of EUR 49.2 billion.
