Survey: majority in favor of ending education federalism
The results of a survey conducted by the digital association Bitkom show that the majority of German citizens believe that German federalism in education is outdated. 58 percent would like the federal government to make decisions for the federal states in future.
In February 2019, German citizens were surveyed by Bitkom Research on the German education system. In the survey, 58% consider federalism in education to be outdated and would like the federal government to be solely responsible in future. This includes decisions on the range of subjects, types of school, the design of curricula and the financing of teaching materials. In contrast, 16% want the federal states to remain solely responsible for education. Education as a joint task between the federal and state governments is supported by 22%, with Bitkom President Achim Berg criticizing the fact that education is being slowed down by the different school systems within the country. The Digital Pact for Schools, in which the federal government has promised 5 billion euros for the digitalization of schools in the coming years, should be implemented without further delay in the opinion of 67% of respondents.
Digitally competent teachers, digital learning content and digital technology are also desirable. 86% of respondents believe that Germany's schools cannot keep up with international standards when it comes to digitalization. 96% of respondents believe that teachers should be obliged to undergo regular training on digital topics. 87% are of the opinion that digitalization should become an important part of the curriculum. Three quarters of respondents think that technical equipment should be improved. Whether schools should be renovated first is controversial, with 48% saying yes and 50% saying no.
In the future, digital skills in education will be crucial for the training of new skilled workers in industry. SCOPE is publishing a special issue on this topic in June: Employer Branding.
