Synchronous reluctance motors

Efficient even according to new criteria

Synchronous reluctance motors (SynRM) from ABB offer a new way to meet the growing demand for higher energy efficiency. The motors now meet the criteria of the new ultra-premium energy efficiency class IE5, as defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

They reduce energy losses by up to 50 percent and enable lower energy consumption than asynchronous motors in efficiency class IE2. ABB introduced SynRM technology in 2011. Case studies in industrial plants have shown that energy consumption can be reduced by up to 25 percent, depending on the application.

The efficiency in accordance with the IE5 standard is made possible by the SynRM concept, which combines the performance benefits of permanent magnet technology with the simplicity of an asynchronous motor. According to the manufacturer, further advantages of the IE5 SynRM motors are the lower bearing and winding temperatures, which ensure greater reliability and a longer service life. as
