Diverse-redundant absolute encoders for safety-critical applications

In addition to its classic range of elaborately certified SIL safety encoders, sensor manufacturer Posital is now offering an alternative.

New to the range are divers-redundant absolute encoders, which are based on non-certified standard components and are ideally suited to a wide range of applications where functional safety is required. The new encoders can achieve PL d, Cat. 3 according to ISO 13849 in the safety system. Redundancy means that two independent sensor systems are installed whose individually determined measured values are processed in the higher-level safety PLC. If both values are the same (within defined tolerances), fault-free operation is assumed. If there are deviations, the control system sounds an alarm - with the option of shutting down the entire system in a controlled manner.

To be on the safe side, Posital uses different measurement principles for redundancy. Diverse-redundant is the key term. The new devices are available as so-called tandem encoders: magnetic and optical measurement technology are housed in a compact 58 millimeter diameter housing that is easy to install. The resolution is 16 bits per revolution. dsc
