New automation system
SMC continues to invest in the Egelsbach site
At the end of May, SMC put a new automation system into operation at its Egelsbach plant. The Lang automation unit Eco-Compact 20, an automatic workpiece storage system, uses a two-axis linear module to load and unload the connected five-axis machining center with workpiece blanks fully automatically.
With the current investment, the Egelsbach plant is further increasing its machine capacity: The improvement in productivity has been achieved through reduced set-up times for the automated loading and unloading of the machine, enabling even more economical in-house production of workpieces, according to the company. During the automatic program runtime, the employee is available for other value-adding activities. Unmanned operation after the end of the shift is also possible, which can further increase productivity.
"Thanks to the investment, we have to place fewer orders with external suppliers. This has a correspondingly positive effect on our machine utilization," says Marius Pulter, Production Manager at SMC, about the improvements. He puts the annual savings at several tens of thousands of euros. Lang plans to use the workpiece storage system for production orders with a machine runtime of at least 4 hours. Even highly complex production components weighing up to 30 kilograms can be excellently automated. In particular, the production of customer-specific housings, heads and covers for various cylinder series as well as the manufacture of multiple connection plates for valve terminals or control blocks will benefit from the increased level of automation. In the SMC range, these are specifically components for the CQ compact cylinder series or the New SY valve series, for example.
The automation system takes over the fully automatic loading and unloading of the five-axis machining center at the Egelsbach plant. Only the workpiece storage unit is still loaded manually with the blanks. The rotary table of the workpiece storage unit has space for up to 20 vices. Identical or different workpieces can be clamped in these. This provides great production flexibility and the prospect of further reducing delivery times at the site. as
