Condition monitoring

How the engine works

With Motor Scan, WEG has developed a solution for remote monitoring of electric motors. The Motor Scan enables real-time monitoring of WEG electric motors via an intelligent device app, which is available for Android and iOS.

Any number of motors can be monitored via the app. System operators and maintenance engineers can plan preventive or predictive maintenance measures based on the operating data read out. This contributes to an extended service life of the motors and increased system availability.

Deviations in operation immediately visible

Wilmar Henning, Managing Director of WEG Germany, comments: "When developing WEG Motor Scan, we had engineers and technicians in mind who need to monitor the condition of installed motors to ensure constant availability and high process efficiency. In the field of Industry 4.0 and networked drive technology, WEG is therefore focusing on technologies that offer users direct added value at a reasonable cost. The WEG Motor Scan fulfills precisely these requirements. Thanks to real-time monitoring, our solution can prevent problems and failures before they occur. This enables users to reduce costs, improve the profitability of their machines and systems and use resources more efficiently."

Condition monitoring also as a retrofit

With dimensions of 44 x 38 x 25 millimetres, Motor Scan can be retrofitted to WEG electric motors in IEC sizes 63 to 450. In addition to the surface temperature and operating time, it also measures the vibrations of the motor. This is made possible by a three-axis vibration measurement of up to three kilohertz. At a later stage, the Motor Scan will also determine and record the speed, start/stop time, load and efficiency values.

The condition monitoring solution has an IP66 protection class and is suitable for various industrial applications. The battery has a service life of three years. Motor Scan works reliably even under extreme conditions for ambient temperatures from minus 40 to plus 80 degrees Celsius. The collected data is transmitted to a secure cloud via Bluetooth or later via gateway technology, where it can then be accessed via a mobile app or a web portal, the WEG IoT platform.

The WEG IoT platform offers analysis tools for fault diagnostics and allows warnings to be configured if certain values are exceeded. This enables maintenance staff to call up real-time data on the current performance of the electric motor from anywhere using a tablet or smartphone, analyze it directly via the app or web portal and act accordingly. In future, the sensor will be able to record even more data to enable more in-depth analyses. Both energy efficiency and motor condition, such as imbalance, misalignment and bearing condition, will be measurable in the future. as
